  • with signature and date lower left: Rembrandt f. / 16[5 or 6]9
After cleaning the painting in 1976 three digits of the date became visible. According to Brown the third digit is either a 5 or a 6. Brown, attributing this painting to Rembrandt, states that both signature and date are probably not authentic (Brown/Plesters 1977, p. 286-291).
Current attribution
Rembrandt
or circle of Rembrandt
This painting was always regarded as an autograph Rembrandt, until doubted by Tümpel in 1986. He considered this painting as a work by someone from Rembrandt's circle (Tümpel 1986, no. A 77). However, most art historians remained convinced of an attribution to Rembrandt or at least that it originated from Rembrandt's studio (see for instance: MacLaren/Brown 1991, p. 364-367; Lloyd Williams/Dudok van Heel 2001, no. 125; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 223). The National Gallery lists this painting as Rembrandt (website museum, accessed 2019-10-01).
