In the sale catalogues of 1787, 1788 and 1794 the painting was attributed to Jan Lievens and in 1866 Giacomo Delucca donated the painting to Galleria Sabauda as by Lievens. The museum maintained this attribution until Bode in 1885 attributed the painting to Rembrandt and dated it c. 1628/1629 (Bode 1885, p. 368, 641). In 1953 Van Gelder suggested an attribution to Gerard Dou (Van Gelder 1953, p. 37, note 9). According to the Rembrandt Research Project the manner of painting and the composition place this work convincingly between Rembrandt's autograph paintings between 1627 and 1630 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 17).
