In 1935 and 1958 it was mentioned that the painting was transferred from panel to canvas (Bredius 1935, no. 609; Stockholm 1958, p. 164, no. 1349). However, study with x-radiography showed that this statement is incorrect (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 46; Cavalli-Björkman/Fryns/Sidén 2005, no. 416).
