    The infrared photograph and more in particular one of the autoradiographs reveal a second signature, undoubtedly applied earlier and subsequently covered during the extended genesis of the painting in the volute-shaped ornamental post towards the head of the bed (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings vol.5 (2005), p. 571). After technical research Laurenze-Landsberg and Kleinert conclude that this signature must be a later addition (Claudia Laurenze-Landsberg and Katja Kleinert, research project Gemäldegalerie).
