Horse in Art comment: This is a peculiar horse. The spots are not black but brown with a lighter ring. The horse is shod and presumably Spanish. The artist must have been fascinated by the spotted pattern and also by the individual spots themselves, because he rendered very precisely the various colors and shapes in each spot. With its heavy neck this horse could have come from Spain, but the spotted pattern was not common there. It is striking that the artist painted some horses of impressive beauty towards the end of life, in contrast to the scenes of farming and rural life with common animals and their owners, he made before.
