This painting was accepted as an autograph Rembrandt in the early 20th century. Valentiner regarded the painting as a study for one of the figures in a lost Circumcision by Rembrandt, of which now only a copy exists (Valentiner 1923, no. 66). However, Bauch did not include this painting in his survey on Rembrandt paintings. He stated that the work is obviously a partial copy after the lost Circumcision, painted in the late style of Fabritius (Bauch 1966, p. 48).
