Current attribution
Rembrandt
In the art historical literature this painting has always been regarded as an authograph Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2011), no. V 18). Only Gerson and Tümpel expressed some doubts. Gerson stated that it had some connection to the work of Samuel van Hoogstraten and Tümpel mentioned that he was not wholly convinced of the attribution to Rembrandt (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 583; Tümpel 1986, no. 70*).
Date
Exact or approximate dating of the described art work; the search parameters adopted for this art work in this database, are found in brackets.
c. 1651 (1651)
The last digit of the date is illebible. Most authors mention a date of 1651 (see for instance: Bredius 1935, no. 583; Klessmann 1983, p. 166; Tümpel 1986, no. 70*). According to the RRP a date early in the 1650s seems probable (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2011), no. VI 18). In the latest volume of the Corpus the painting is dated 1650 or slightly later (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 219).
