Rejected attribution
Jan Lievens
The painting is probably identical with an item in the 1632 inventory of stadholder Frederik Hendrik, described as a work by Jan Lievens. This attribution is accepted by Börsch-Supan (Börsch-Supan 1967).
Jan Gillisz. van Vliet
Gustav Waagen catalogued the painting as a work by J.G. van Vliet in his Verzeichnis der Gemälde-Sammlung des Königlichen Museums zu Berlin of 1830 (Waagen 1833). This attribution was accepted in all the catalogues of the museum until 1860. The painting was attributed to Rembrandt in the catalogue of 1878 (Meyer/Bode/Tschudi [s.a.]).
