Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • signed and dated below, right of the middle: Rembrandt. ft. 1634
Somewhere before 1774 the last digit of the date was painted over with a 5. During restoration in 1977/78 this overpaint was removed and the 4 was recovered (Vliegenthart 1981, p. 102). According to the RRP an other digit is legible below the 4. This digit is probably a 5, but has also been read as a 2 or 3 (Gerson 1968, no. 61; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 92). The RRP raises doubts about the authenticity of the inscription (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 92). These doubts are no longer expressed in the latest volume of the Corpus (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 130).
