De Hooch adopted the subject of a company playing cards, the motif of a player cheating in the foreground, looking at the beholder. He repeated interior elements such as the table in the center covered with an oriental carpet, with a jug and a slate, the mantelpiece and the opened door in the background. (as observed by E. Schavemaker)
