According to the RRP this painting was overpainted (a tall hat, dark, long curly hair, earrings, cloak and golden chains were added) relatively soon after it's original execution. As can be deduced from older photographs, these overpaintings were removed in different stages. After the last overpaintings were removed between 1996-2002, it's present state became visible (Van de Wetering 2002A, p. 17-25).

    Two wax seals on the reverse indicating that this painting was in the possesson of Christain Gottlob Frege or his son or grandson who bear the same name (Sotheby's auction catalogue, 2003-07-10, no. 19; Van de Wetering 2002A, p. 17-25).
Current attribution

Large parts of this painting were overpainted. As can be deduced from older photographs, these overpaintings were removed in different stages. After the last overpaintings were removed, the RRP attributed the painting to Rembrandt (Van de Wetering 2002A, p. 17-25).
