Current attribution
studio of Rembrandt
or Rembrandt
In the art-historical literature the present painting was always viewed as an autograph Rembrandt, until doubted by Gerson in 1969 (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 109). In 1986 Tümpel lists the painting among the works from Rembrandt's workshop (Tümpel 1986, no. A74). In the Berlin exhibition catalogue "Rembrandt: Genie auf der Suche" the painting was presumed to be painted by someone from the "circle of Rembrandt" (Kelch/Van de Wetering 2006, no. 37). In de last volume of the Corpus the painting is listed as a work by Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 193). Recent technical and art-historical research by the Gemäldegalerie refute this attribution. According to Laurenze-Landsberg and Kleinert it is very likely that the painting has been painted by someone from Rembrandt's workshop (Claudia Laurenze-Landsberg and Katja Kleinert, research project Berlin Gemäldegalerie).
