Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • signed and dated center right: Rembrandt 166(.)
The last digit of the date is no longer legible (Wheelock 2014, NGA online editions). It has been read as a '2' (Granberg 1894, p. 30-32) and a '3' (Amsterdam 1935, no. 29; Bredius 1935, no. 312). According to Van de Wetering, the remains of the third cipher are usually taken to be a '6', although this could also be a '5' (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 247).

c. 1660 (1650 - 1663)
Due to the difficult legibility of the ciphers, the painting was dated variously to 1640-1650 (Granberg 1886, no. 49); 1662 (Granberg 1894, p. 30-32); 1663 (Amsterdam 1935, no. 29; Bredius 1935, no. 312) and 1656 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 247). The National Gallery of Art in Washington dates the painting c. 1660 (Wheelock, NGA online editions, accessed 2018-01-16).
