  • signed and dated center right: Rembrandt 166(.)
The last digit of the date is no longer legible (Wheelock 2014, NGA online editions). It has been read as a '2' (Granberg 1894, p. 30-32) and a '3' (Amsterdam 1935, no. 29; Bredius 1935, no. 312). According to Van de Wetering, the remains of the third cipher are usually taken to be a '6', although this could also be a '5' (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 247).
