attributed to Karel van der Pluym
Since the rejection of Rembrandt's authorship of the painting by Bredius and others, most scholars attribute the painting to Karel van der Pluym (Bailey/Iacono 2011).
Rejected attribution
The painting's attribution has been passionately debated since the Rembrandt exhibition held in Amsterdam in 1898. Ascribed to Rembrandt by Hofstede de Groot in the accompanying catalogue, the painting's authorship was doubted by some of the exhibition critics (Scallen 2004). Bredius initially advocated joint authorship by Rembrandt and his workshop. He would revise his judgment later, rejecting any contribution by Rembrandt to the canvas's production in a letter of October 19, 1916, to Frick (Bailey/Iacono 2011).
