Several obtrusive overpaintings have been made, probably in 1775 and certainly not later. This dating is based on a drawing by Jan Stolker done around 1760, which shows several elements such as a vault in the back and Mary’s light cloak. In 1775, Weisbrod made an etching after the painting which does not show these elements and includes all the overpainting present today. This suggests that the overpaintings were done between the creation of the drawing around 1760 and the etching in 1775. It has been suggested the changes have been made by Lebrun in 1774 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings1982-2015, vol 1 (1982), no. A 12).
Shape/dimensions
rectangle (portrait format) 55,4 x 43,7 cm
The members of the RRP suggested that the fact that the back of the panel has not been beveled on any of its four sides prompts the question of whether it has been cut down later. There are, according to them, however, only meagre indications of this having been so. Since 1771 the same measurements have been mentioned as to the current state, so any cutting down must have taken place before then (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 12).
