Object information
Object category
painting
Support/medium
canvas, oil paint
Shape/dimensions
rectangle (portrait format) 98,5 x 74,5 cm
According to the RRP the canvas was trimmed on all four sides. This must have happened before 1756, when the painting was reproduced in its present dimensions by G. F. Smith in a print (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. B 8).
Signature/inscription
Information about the signature, dating, inscription or any other mark on the front or back of the art work
  • with signature left center: [Re]mbrandt.ft
The "Re" of Rembrandt's name is now missing because a strip of the canvas has been cut off in the past (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. B 8). The signature may have been added somewhat later than c. 1635, the currently accepted date of the painting (see: Wheelock, NGA online editions, accessed 2017-12-21).
Current attribution
Rembrandt
and studio of Rembrandt
Since the 1980's scholars have been considering the question to what extent Rembrandt was involved in the process of this painting. The members of the RRP listed the work as a "painting that could be an uncompleted work by Rembrandt" (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1985), no. B 8). Tümpel attributed the painting to the workshop of Rembrandt (Tümpel 1986, no. A 38). Wheelock suggested that the original design was made by Rembrandt and that it was worked up by a pupil, possibly Govaert Flinck (Wheelock, NGA online editions, accessed 2017-12-21).
