Physical connection
Reference in ‘composite artworks’: artworks that are/were connected, such as alterpieces, decorative pieces incorporated in panelling, and works of art that were intended to be displayed together, such as pendants and series.

This work probably formed a pair with the Portrait of a man trimming his quill in Kassel, based on the similar structures of the canvases, the completion of both works in 1632, and stylistical similarities between the portrayed figures. Before the reduction in size of the female portrait, the measurements were about equal to those of the male portrait in Kassel, which strengthens the idea they might have formed a pair (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. A 55). Trnek argues against the hypothesis of a pendant pair, based on the fact that the background and space in the two portraits are not continuous (Trnek 1992, p. 319).
canvas, oil paint
rectangle (portrait format) 92 x 71 cm
The painting's size has been reduced as becomes clear from the differences in measurement in the sales catalog from 1738 ("hoogh 3 v. 5 duym, breet 2 v. 10 duym [= 99 x 70 cm]) and the inscription of the mezzotint reproduction by J. F. Clerck in 1798: "Peint par Rembrandt. 1632.
