Rembrandt
or studio of Rembrandt
For a long time the attribution of this painting to Rembrandt remained undisputed. In 1986 this attribution was questioned by the members of the Rembrandt Research Project who wrote that the painting was "probably painted in Rembrandt's workshop" (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 72). However, this rejection was not generally accepted. Slatkes and Liedtke regard the painting as an autograph work (Slatkes 1992; Liedtke 1996). In the last volumes of the Corpus Van de Wetering suggests that companion piece of the the present paining is entirely executed by a different hand. According to him the present painting is by Rembrandt and the portraint of the man by a workshop assistant (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-, vol. 6 (2015), no. 118a).
