In the earlier art-historical literature this painting was regarded as an autograph Rembrandt (see for instance: Hofstede de Groot 1907-1928, vol. 6 (1915), no. 8). Since 1935 this painting has generally been considered as a work by a pupil of Rembrandt, reworked by the master himself (see for instance: Bredius 1935, under no. 498; Brown/Kelch/ Van Thiel 1991, p. 182; Geneviève et al. 2003, no. 44) or a work solely made by a pupil of Rembrandt (see for instance: Rutgers/Rijnders 2014, p. 91-92; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), under no. 136). Different suggestions for the identification of this pupil have been made: Lievens (Wessem 1956, p. 6), Flinck (see for instance: Regteren Altena 1957, p. 122; Von Moltke 1965, p. 66, no. 6; Middelkoop et al. 2017, p. 25) and Bol (Brown/Kelch/ Van Thiel 1991, p. 182). In the online collection catalogue of the museum, the painting is listed as studio of Rembrandt and reworked by Rembrandt (online collection catalogue, accessed 2018-09-19).

Rembrandt, De engel voorkomt dat Abraham zijn zoon Isaak offert
This drawing is usually regarded as a preparatory sketch for the painting with the same subject which is now in the Hermitage (RKD Images no. 40898) (see for instance: Royalton-Kisch 2010, no. 10). In 2015 Van de Wetering argued that this drawing is the preparaory sketch for the painting of The sacrifice of Abraham, kept in Munich (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), under no. 136).
