This painting was always regarded as an preparatory oil sketch by Rembrandt for an etching known as the "Large Coppenol" (RKD Images no.45674) until doubted by Gerson and Von Sonneburg in 1969. Gerson stated that the execution of the painting was to weak to be attributed to Rembrandt (Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 291). Von Sonnenburg added to this that the painting "is a copy after rather than a sketch for the etching" (Von Sonnenburg 1973, p. 88). The rejection of Rembrandt's authorship was followed by most art historians, until Luijten and Van de Wetering reattributed the painting to Rembrandt in 2000, stating that it is an oil sketch by Rembrandt, made for his etching of Van Coppenol (Hinterding et al. 2000, p. 57-62, 358).
