  • inspired by
Gerard Dou, Jonge vrouw aan een klavichord
Vermeer repeated the key elements from Dou's composition: the woman seated at a keyboard, glancing coyly outward. He also adopted the viola da gamba, the blue dress, the window on the left and the draped curtain which frames the scene and functions as a bridge between the pictorial space and that of the beholder. (Waiboer et al. 2017, p. 139)

  • used as model for
    Cornelis de Man, Musicerend paar
De Man adopted the main motif of a woman seated at a keyboard instrument and looking up to the beholder, the use of full-length figures and the tiled floor. (as observed by A. Waiboer)

  • contains artwork by
    Dirck van Baburen, De koppelaarster
The painting by Dirck van Baburen was owned by Vermeer's mother-in-law Maria Thins (Wheelock 1997)
