Vermeer adopted the motif of a standing young woman playing an instrument with a keyboard, the use of a single knee-length figure, the motif of a chair upholstered with blue velvet acting as a repoussoir in the immediate foreground at the right and elements of the interior such as a light-coloured plastered wall and a painting in a black frame serving as a rectangular accent in the background to balance out the composition. (Buvelot et al. 2005, p. 122)
