Corresponding in both works are the subject of a woman standing turned to the left and reading a letter, the colouring in the dress of the woman (blue jacket or bodice and white silk satin gown), the chairs upholstered with blue velvet. In both scenes, the main protagonist is shown on some distance from the viewer. Gudlaugsson also noted that the presence of blue and yellow originates from Vermeer, but did not specifically make references to this painting by Vermeer. (Gudlaugsson 1959-1960, vol. 2, p. 174)
