In the early catalogues of the Kassel-collection, the painting was described as by Rembrandt (Causid 1783, no. 16; Cassel 1830, no. 371). However, by the end of the 19th century, the painting was listed as a copy after Rembrandt (Eisenmann 1888, no. 229). According to the members of the Rembrandt Research Project, the execution of this painting is "not clearly rembrandtesque" (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1987), cited under no. A 120).
