Johannes Vermeer, Allegorie op de schilderkunst
'Morley's 1968 painting, ''Vermeer, Portrait of an artist in his Studio'', is based on a poster of Vermeer's famous allegorical painting ''The Art of Painting'', also known as ''The Painter's Studio'', in which the artist, depicted from the rear, is painting from a model in his studio. The painting virtually acts as a mirror for Morley. Like the artist in the Vermeer work, Morley sits at his easel in his studio, closely studying his model. When he paints, however, Morley does not see the total picture' (Clearwater 2005).
