According to Beresford fragments of a signature and date were found during a cleaning of this painting in 1949-1953. These traces are not visible any more (Beresford 1998, p. 193; Bergvelt/Jonker 2016, no. 105).
Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
or circle of Rembrandt
Art historians differ in opinion about the attribution of this painting. Doubts about Rembrandt's authorship have been expressed since the 19th century (Richter/Sparkes 1880, p. 127, no. 282). In 1986 Tümpel listed this painting as by someone from Rembrandt's circle (Tümpel 1986, no. A 97). It was omitted from the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings vol. 6. However, other art historians are convinced of an attribution to Rembrandt (see for instance: Hofstede de Groot 1912A, p. 175, note 1; Bauch 1966, no. 434; Giltaij 2003, no. 47; Bergvelt/Jonker 2016, p. 168-170).

(Bauch 1966, no. 434); c. 1666 (Slatkes 1992, no. 176); c. 1667-1668 (Giltaij 2003, no. 47); c. 1668 (Bergvelt/Jonker 2016, p. 168-170). According to Beresford fragments of a signature and date were found during a cleaning of this painting in 1949-1953 (Beresford 1998, p. 193). This painting was said to have bore the date [...]63.
