Current attribution
attributed to Rembrandt
and studio of Rembrandt
or studio of Rembrandt
This painting was always regarded as an authentic Rembrandt until doubted by Tümpel and the RRP in 1986. They attributed this painting to Rembrandt's studio (Tümpel 1986, no. A 118; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 2 (1986), no. C 65). In 2004 it was suggested that this painting was made by Rembrandt with the help of a pupil (Hedley/Duffy 2004, p. 349). This attribution has since then been generally accepted, although there is no consensus of opinion on the extent of the studio assistance (Brown 2006A, p. 58-60; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), no. 77a).
