Verwijst naar gedetailleerde, grotendeels feitelijke, topografische aanzichten, in het bijzonder 18de-eeuwse Italiaanse schilderingen, tekeningen of prenten van steden. De eerste vedute werden waarschijnlijk geschilderd door Noord-Europese kunstenaars die in de 16de eeuw in Italië werkzaam waren. De term verwijst meer in het algemeen naar schilderingen, tekeningen of prenten waarop een landschap of stadsgezicht is afgebeeld met een hoofdzakelijk topografische karakter.
