Photographic portraits of artists and studio photos

The RKD manages an important collection of photographic portraits of artists, collectors, gallery owners and others closely affiliated to the art scene. The photo collection, with works from artists such as Emmy Andriesse, Eva Besnyö, Cor Dekkinga and Philip Mechanicus, is currently being supplemented with portrait and studio photographs by contemporary Dutch photographers. We currently have more than 1600 photographs by photographers such as Koos Breukel, Hans de Bruijn, Marianne Dommisse, Nico Koster, Helena van der Kraan, Michiel van Nieuwkerk, André Smits and Vincent Mentzel.

Armando, Karel Appel and Marlene Dumas

The collection varies from staged studio portraits to spontaneous photographs taken by photographers on familiar terms with those in the photos. Sometimes the studio only serves as a background, though it is often prominently depicted in the photo. These studios vary from neat and tidy areas to messy workshops full of dust, daubs of paint and squeezed tubes.  All portraits, Armando, Karel Appel, Marlene Dumas and Rineke Dijkstra included, are accessible and described in Explore. This database offers a unique overview of Dutch photographic portraits of artists.
