The Arts in Leiden

Between 1475 and 1575 the Leiden cultural scene went through a period of unprecedented growth. The Leiden archives contain relatively many preserved documents on the group of artists and artisans active during this period.

Project

The aim of this research project is to provide full access to the archival records in the Leiden Archives on artists from the period 1475-1575. The results can be accessed online via RKDexcerpts. Jeremy Bangs PhD and Yvette Bruijnen PhD carried out the research on behalf of the Leiden Archive (Heritage Leiden and Environs), the institute where the original archive documents are kept.

The project sheds new light on prints by Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533). A wealth of new biographical information on the artist will be made public, as well as a unique overview of the civic position of the artists, their mutual collaborations, their family links and their relations to their commissioners.
