Because of the complicated genesis of this painting the RRP listed the work in the B-category of the Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, stating that Rembrandt's authorship can not entirely be ruled out. However, they expressed a preference for an attribution to a follower of Rembrandt. Other art-historians also expressed their doubts about the attribution to Rembrandt (see for instance: Bauch 1966, no. 306; not included by Tümpel 1986; Slatkes 1992, no. 253). According to the RRP the painting is uncompleted, with additions by a another artist (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. B 11). This idea was followed in the exhibition catalogue 'Rembrandt by himself' (White et al. 1999, no. 52). - Datering
ca. 1639
In the earlier art-historical literature this painting is usually dated around 1634 (Hofstede de Groot 1907-1928 (German edition), vol. 6 (1915), no. 538; Bauch 1966, no. 306). Since 1989 it is believed that the painting originated around 1639-1640 (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 3 (1989), no. B 11).
