not born in Deventer, but probably in Utrecht or The Hague. Utrecht would seem more likely, since he is mentioned as coming from Utrecht in the register of the marriage banns; however, his family lived in The Hague from April 1589 until after 1602 (Bok/Kobayashi 1985, p. 7-9). Houbraken states that he was born in Deventer in 1588, based on a published notification by Richard ter Brugghen; however, Houbraken however also states that Ter Brugghen's father fled from Overijssel in 1581 and settled in Utrecht. Sandrart and De Bie previously published that Ter Brugghen was born in 1587 in Utrecht.
Overleden
Utrecht (stad) 1629-11-01
probably died of the plague. Houbraken mentions that he died suddenly in his 42nd year, on all saints’ day (Houbraken 1718, p. 134).

son of Jan Egbertsz ter Brugghen (1561-1626) and Feijsgen Dircx; married to Jacomyna Verbeeck (died 1634) in Utrecht, 15 October 1616. Their son Richard ter Brugghen (1619-1710) became a laywer. Richard ter Brugghen donated the series of the four evangelists of 1621 to the city of Deventer in 1707 (De Bie 1709, p. 274, Houbraken 1718, p. 135; RKDimages 229763). Houbraken writes that he learned this from a printed extract of the Resolutions of the city of Deventer of 5 August 1707. Hofstede de Groot could not find a printed Resolution, but published an extract of the Liber Resolutionum civitatis Daventriae 1704-1708 (XXIII) of 4 August 1707, which he received from the city archivist (Hofstede de Groot 1893A, p. 439). Richard ter Brugghen also published a letter by Adriaen van der Werff of April 5th 1707, in which he states that Hendrick ter Brugghen was a great painter (Ter Brugghen/Van der Werff 1707, also included in Kramm 1862, appendix, p. 147). See also M.J. Bok in Blankert/Slatkes 1986, p. 73, note 57.
