In 1857 he enrolled at the Ecole Municipale de Dessin in Aix-en-Provence, where he studied until 1860 under Joseph Gibert (1806–1884).

In 1859 he began to study law at the Université d’Aix. In 1861 he abandoned his law studies and, wishing to become a painter. In April 1861 he moved to Paris
