Johan Christian Dahl died on 14 October 1857 and was buried in the Elias cemetery in Dresden. In 1934 his remains were moved to St. Jacob's churchyard in his native Bergen (Bang 1987, p. 20).

Opleiding
The Royal Danish Art Academy (Kopenhagen)
Started his training at the Royal Danish Art Academy in 1811, in 1817 Dahl ended his Academy studies, archieving the 'Great Silver Maedal'.
Königliche Kunstakademie (Dresden)
Dahl was received as a member of the Dresden Academy in 1820.

    From 1803 to 1809 Dahl had an apprenticeship in the painter workshop of Johan G. Müller in Bergen, Norway. (Bang 1987, p. 19) in 1811 he left Bergen.
  • Kopenhagen 1811 - 1818
    Dahl had left Bergen with financial aid from the burgher society 'Vennekredsen'. In 1815 he had his first triumph at the annual Academy exhibition at Charlottenborg, where he showed thirteen landscape paintings.
  • Dresden 1818 - 1820
    In 1818 he left Copenhagen and went to Dresden. In Dresden he met Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). June 1819 Dahl got a visit in Dresden from the Danish Crown Prince Christain Frederik, who was on his way to Italy.

    On 24 July 1820 he arrived in Rome to join Prince Christain Frederik in Italy, he left Rome before 11 August 1820.
