Rubens en J. Brueghel I).
Ever since the 1930s, Nathan (1893-1949) and Benjamin Katz (1891-1962) ran art dealership D. Katz, located in Dieren, which was together with art dealership Goudstikker in Amsterdam on of the biggest art dealerships in The Netherlands at the time. The brothers continued the antique store that their father father Daniël Katz had started at the end of the 19th century. Nathan and Benjamin were the only partners in the firm, which added another location to its name in May of 1940 in The Hague. At the start of World War II the brothers were in business with the Germans, and they sold art to Göring, Hitler and Alois Miedl. The latter had taken over art dealership Goudstikker in May of 1940 after its original owner Jacques Goudstikker was killed while he was fleeing the country to England. On the 17th of February 1941 went into liquidation to prevent the Jewish firm from falling into the hands of the Germans. In February of 1942 Nathan fled to Switzerland, where he started an art dealership in Basel that was continued after his death in 1949 by his son David, at first in Basel and later in St. Moritz (source: NRC handelsblad, 24 september 2007). On the 1st of June 1943 the firm was officially closed down. To make sure business could continue, they had already established 'Schilderijen en Antiquiteitenhandel v/h D. Katz N.V.' in May 1941. Non-Jewish business relations were appointed as directors. After the war, these directors resigned and the firm was continued by Benjamin Katz until his death in 1962, and after that for a short period of time by his sons Daniël, Nico and Nathan. The firm was then located at the Spoorstraat. (Website Adviescommissie Restitutieverzoeken Cultuurgoederen en Tweede Wereldoorlog, Advies RC 1.90-A)
