At his birth he inherited fl. 6000 from his father as well as part of the family dwelling Hoge Nieuwstraat 83. On 20 December 1652 his mother Maria Rommerswal made her last will, while she remarried on 27 December 1654 with Jonkheer (Sir) Daniël van der Houte / du Boys, an officer in the army of prince Wllem van Nassau, stadtholder of Friesland. This marriage immediately got into deep waters, when the groom tried to appropriate goods and moneys from his bride contrairy to the prenuptial agreement. Despite the help of the church council and the city elders and burgomasters, the marriage was dissolved in divorce on 8 May 1658 (the groom went into the service of the king of Sweden). On 4 January 1661 Du Bois was back and stalking his former wife and stepdaughter Maria, threatening to kill them and trying to force himself into the house (Balm/Boezeman 2006).

On 24 January 1674 his mother died. Pieter and his widowed sister Maria rented rooms in the house where their mother had died, on Nieuwehaven (nowadays Aardappelmarkt) . The probate inventory shows that brother and sister were very well off afterwards. Pieter only had to start a court case against his former legal guardian, Cornelis Michielsz. Pompe, Heer van Meerdervoort, who owed the van der Hult family fl. 9000. When his siter died in 1677 Pieter was already in Italy, so that he oly learned, that he was her heir in 1677 (which turned out to be not the case in 1725) (Balm/Boezeman 2006)

A large piece with a hyena, apes and sun flowers got lost in the 1884 fire at Charlottenborg Castle. In 1702 the Dutch envoy in Copenhagen, Robert Goes, would testify that he knew the painter and his wife from when they lived in Copenhagen.
