baptized on 9 April 1623. Houbraken states, that he was born 'overmaas', e.g. on the other side of the river Meuse (Maas). Adriaen was born in Poortugaal, a village near Rotterdam. Until recently it was wrongly assumed that he was born c. 1620 in Flushing (Vlissingen) (Jager 2016).

buried on 19 January 1675, although it is not certain that this our painter: a certain Adriaen Verdoel 'fijnschilder' became a member of the Guild in Middelburg in 1695, possibly a son or a nephew(Jager 2016).

son of Joris Claesz. Verdoel (corn miller) (1585-1631/37) and Susanna IJsbrantsdr. van Bijlant (c. 1583-1650). Bonds of friendship and business tied him to Franchois van den Ende, schoolmaster (of Spinoza) and art dealer in the Nes in Amsterdam. He was also a friend of writer/poet Joannes Antonides van der Goes (1647-1684), a pupil of Van den Ende (Houbraken). Adriaen was marrried with Cornelia Willemsdr. (date unknown), with whom he made a will in Haarlem in February 1654, while she was pregnant.. On 28 August 1655 he is styled widower with a 20-weeks old son Nicolaes, signing a prenuptial agreement with his second wife Maria Cornelisdr. van Warmondt on 21 August 1655. Father of Adriaen Verdoel II.

    The family moved before 1626 to Schiedam. Mother Susanna became city midwife in Brielle as a widow, in 1643, where she went to live and where she died in 1650 (Jager 2016).

    He is mentioned on 17 April 1640 by Jacob de Wet in his sketchbook as his apprentice (Jager 2016). In 1649 he became a member of Saint Luke's Guild in Haarlem. he is mentioned in Haarlem till 1660 (Jager 2016).
  • Vlissingen 1666 - 1675
    before 1666. He was a member of the chamber of rhetoricians in Vlissingen, where in the year 1675 he won the highest price for his concise and meaningful answer to the proposed question (Houbraken 1719).
