Physicist, founder (c. 1900) and director of the N.V. Nederlandsche Instrumentenfabriek (later: N.V. Nederlandse Instrumenten- en Electrische Apparatenfabriek), print dealer (from c. 1913) and founder of the 'Grafische Studieverzameling Dr. N.G. van Huffel'. In 1922-'23 this study collection of c. 7000 prints and c. 300 books was sold by him to the School voor de Grafische Vakken in Utrecht (today: Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht, www.glu.nl). As part of the transaction, Van Huffel became teacher at the school, and curator of the collection (Enschedé 1923, Meijer 1993-1994). Initially the books and prints were kept in the 'Studiekabinet van de School van de Grafische Vakken', on the first floor of his own house (Prinsenstraat 23). In 1932 after a conflict he was dismissed as a teacher and curator; in 1934 it was transferred to the school's Grafisch Museum, which in that year was officially opened at the Nicolaasdwarsstraat 3 (but the first initative dated already from 1922). The collection was severely damaged during WW II and, after failed attempts to revitalize it, in 1958 the museum was definitively closed. In 1959 the remains of the 'Grafische Studieverzameling Dr. N.G. van Huffel' were donated by the school to the Dutch state, which dispersed it over several museums and institutes. Most of it went to Leiden University in 1961, today as: Leiden University Library, collection N.G. van Huffel (see the online library catalogue under: Special Collections; see for a complete history of Van Huffel's collection: Meijer 1993-1994). In 1915 Van Huffel became editor of the periodical Oude Kunst (until 1922 when it was discontinued), in 1917 also of the Veilingkroniek; the latter only existed in the period 1917-1918.
