Rubens en J. Brueghel I).

  • Les Andelys (Eure) 1611 - 1612
According to Poussin's biographer Bellori, the painter Quintin Varin, who worked in Les Andelys, encouraged him to paint.
  • Parijs 1612 - 1621
In Paris, Poussin became a professional painter. Until 1620 he made several trips outside the city to carry out assignments for clients living on land.
  • Florence 1621 - 1622
ca. 1621 Poussin left Paris for the purpose of traveling to Rome; however, he did not go beyond Florence. The cause of this was perhaps due to his weak health, which would bother him his entire life.
  • Parijs 1622 - 1623
Return to Paris, where he received his first major official assignment. In this period, Poussin received several assignments for decorative painting.
  • Rome 1624 - 1640
On his arrival in Rome, Poussin had the disadvantage of lacking clients and as he had no formal training, he had trouble keeping their heads above water in the first few years. In 1625-1627 he was commissioned by the Flemish painter Daniël Seghers (who was also in Rome at the time) to paint two religious works for Cassiano dal Pozzo, a client with whom Poussin would have a relationship for thirty years. In 1626, Poussin shared a home with the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy. In 1630 he was somewhat settled in Rome and he married the sister of the painter Gaspard Dughet, Ann-Marie. Dughet moved in with the couple in 1636. Big commission at this time for Cardinal Richelieu: a series of bacchanals for his newly built castle near Orléans
  • Parijs 1640 - 1642
Poussin received, among other things, the honorable assignment of King Louis XIII to decorate the 'Grande Galerie' in the Louvre. However, he would never complete this project: only a large number of preparatory sketches remains.
  • Rome 1643 - 1665
1647-1648: the most productive years of Poussin's career; In 1651 his health began to deteriorate rapidly. The trembling of his hand can be deduced from his drawings from this period. In 1664 his wife Ann-Marie died and Poussin's health deteriorated, so much so that he donated his last painting, "Apollo and Daphne" (now in the Louvre) to Cardinal Massimi while it was not yet completed, knowing that he would never again would be able to finish the work. Eventually Poussin died in 1665 at the age of 72 after a long illness.
