In the contentious succession between his elder brothers Julius Heinrich and Franz Karl he took the side of the latter (This strive was only ended in 1656 with Julius Heinrich's elevation as Duke). he remained in the service of the Swedes and later withdrew to Treptow an der Rega, where he stayed with his cousin Sophie von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1579–1658),widow of duke Philipps of Pommerania. There he married Marie Juliane von Nassau-Siegen.
