In 1758 Gottfried Winckler was elected to the Leipzig Council and later appointed city captain. In 1792 he became city builder. In 1781 he was one of the co-founders of the Gewandhaus concerts and was until 1784 a member of its honorary working directorate. In 1776 he was one of the founders of the "Harmonie" society in Leipzig. He was also an honorary member of the Dresden Academy of Arts. Goffried had a extensive collectionGoffried began with collecting copper engravings, and later paintings. His collection was open to the public from 1765 on Wednesdays in the afternoon for two hours. In 1765 he had 450 paintings; in 1768 appeared a printed catalog with 628 paintings, Christian Friedrich Wiegang made 8 watercolours of the the hanging of the paintings. When he died the collection included more than 1,300 paintings, 2,469 drawings, 80,000 copperplate engravings and a library of 86,842 volumes. His sons inherited his collection and after a few years they began to auction their part of the collection.
