    Aged 10 he receivend a prebend of Saint Lambertus in Liege, followed by canon of Ments and abbot of Ciney. and the Our Lady church in Aachen. In 1548 he was nominated dean of of the chapter of Saint Lambertus; in 1562 co-adjutor of prince-bishop Robert II van Bergen.

    On 11 April 1564 he was ordained bishop in the Abbey of Herkenrode and in 1565 prince-bishop. In 1568 he came into conflict with William of Orange, who accused him of colluding with the Spaniards. His subjects obliged him to desist from forming a pact with Philip II, and he declared his principality neutral in the conflict between the 17 provinces. This neutrality was more or less maintained till 1794. He resisted the Reformation in his region and received the Jesuits in Maastricht. In 1576 van Groesbeek was nominated abbot of Stavelot and was rewarded by pope Gregory XIII with a cardinalate on 21 February 1578.
