The portrait was attributed to Ovens from the beginning of the twentieth century until 2014. Jan Six then gave the unsigned portrait to Flinck on the basis of technical investigation, stylistic criteria (especially the treatment of the hands), and the pose employed by Flinck for other portraits of elite female patrons. See Larsen 2017, p. 190.
Verworpen toeschrijving: Jürgen Ovens
The portrait is executed in a rougher style than the other portrait by Flinck of Margaretha Tulp in the Six Collection (from 1656; RKDimages number 275947), so it seemed like it was done by another artist. Since Ovens portrayed Nicolaes Tulp twice (see the large version under RKDimages number 12312), as well as Dirck Tulp and his wife Anna Burgh in 1658-1659 (RKDimages numbers 12311 and 12333), the second Margaretha Tulp was attributed to Ovens. Infrared reflectograms reveal that the dress and the arm under the second (undated) Margaretha Tulp are the same as in the 1656 portrait. The bottom part of the second Margaretha Tulp is overpainted.
