The painting was always viewed as an authentic Rembrandt, until doubted bij Bauch in 1933. Bauch came to the conclusion that it had more likely been painted by Jan Lievens or from the school of Rembrandt (Bauch 1933, p. 220). In 1935 Bredius still attributed the painting to Rembrandt, but in the revised edition Gerson called the attribution in question and did not include the painting in his catalogue (Bredius/Gerson 1969, p. 553, no. 72). Sumowski attributed the work to Jacques des Rousseaux (c. 1600-1638) before 1630 (Sumowski 1983-1994, vol. 4 (1989), p. 2506, no. 1675a). In 1995 the painting came on the art market again and was subjected to an investigation by the RRP. Van de Wetering concluded that it could be attributed to Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), p. 637, IV Addendum 3)
