The painting has been extended on all sides by laying the original oak panel into a larger oak panel. The original dimensions were 24.7 x 20 cm (Philadelphia 1994, p. 89. See also DeWitt et al. 2011, no. 40). According to several old descriptions and reproductions, the additions to the painting were once even larger: both of the hands of Christ were partially visible. They were overpainted when the panel was reduced in size (see Slive 1965, p. 413-415; DeWitt et al. 2011, p. 50-55, 142).

The signature and date are located on the outer panel that was a later addition, and is therefore not authentic (Tümpel 1986, no. A 19).

The work is part of a group of several heads of Christ . The version in Philadelphia was generally considered an autograph Rembrandt in the art-historical literature, although Tümpel rejected this attribution (Tümpel 1986, no. A 19). In 2015 Van de Wetering argued that the Philadelphia painting, together with four other heads of Christ, was made by a pupil of Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 6 (2015), under no. 217b). The Philadelphia Museum of Art considers it to be an autograph Rembrandt (online collection catalogue, accessed 2017-07-18).

The Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard Art Museums houses the Alan Burroughs Collection of X-Radiographs, the ﬁrst systematic, large-scale X-ray documentation project assembled to address issues of the authenticity and attribution of paintings. Many of the X-rays were produced between 1925 and 1944 by Burroughs—a Harvard graduate (1920) who became a Fogg Museum research fellow and the keeper of X-ray "shadowgraphs". Today the collection contains approximately 8,000 X-radiographs of over 4,450 paintings from the great collections of America and Europe.
