  De Man repeated the subject of a scholar in his study, wearing a ‘japonsche rok’ (Japanese-style dressing gown), positioned in the corner of a room with a window as the source of light on the left, as well as the map on the back wall, a wooden bench or small table in the foreground, the play of light on the heavy folds of a carpet on the table, the brightly lit piece of paper on the table, the playful and subtle shadows on the back wall and on the floor.
