Van der Neer adopted the subject of a woman seated at a harpsichord, with a man holding a wineglass. The dominent red in the woman's costume is also derived from Metsu. Technical examination shows that Van der Neer's male figure formerly held a violin, which was overpainted by Van der Neer later on. Metsu depicted a violin on the table in the foreground.
