This painting was rejected as a Rembrandt by Rosenberg and Valentiner, who attributed the work to Ferdinand Bol (Rosenberg/Valentiner 1909, p. 540, 566). However, Bode, Hofstede de Groot and Bredius still viewed the painting as by Rembrandt (Bode 1910A, p. 6; Hofstede de Groot 1907-1928 (German edition), vol. 6 (1915), no. 59; Bredius 1935, no. 248). The painting was described in 1955 as not being of "undisputed authenticity" (Benesch 1954-1957, vol. 3 (1955), under no. 591). The work is nowadays regarded as from the workshop of Rembrandt (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 5 (2011), no. V 1, copies no. 2; Bevers/Kleinert/Laurenze-Landsberg 2015, p. 29, 30, 96).
