This painting has generally been accepted as a work by Rembrandt (see for instance: Bauch 1966, no. 301; Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 1 (1982), no. A 40; Tümpel 1986, no. 160). Only Knuttel and Gerson expressed doubts about the attribution (Knuttel 1956, 249; Bredius/Gerson 1969, no. 16).

according to an annotation in a copy of the sale catalogue (RKD, The Hague); According to the exhibition catalogue of 1970 the painting was bought at this auction by Dutuit for 16,709 francs (Paris 1970A, no. 186). , Lugt no. 15918: "Son portrait en pied. - .Bois; haut., 24 ½ pouc., larg., 20. Rembrant avait vingt-six ans lorsqu’il exécuta ce portrait. Il s’est représenté en costume arménien. Il est coiffé d’un turban surmonté d’une aigrette; sa figure, vue de face, est encadrée dans une chevelure brune et frisée qui descend sur ses épaules. Le bras droit, dont le poignet est appuyé sur la hanche, sort de dessous un manteaux de velours rattaché par trois agrafes, qui recouvre le bras gauche, soutenu par une canne, et descend brodé à l’intérieur, jusqu’aux pieds. Une ceinture de soie et d’or, après avoir envelope le corps, retombe en écharpe sur une espèce de tunique brodée et frangée. L’une de ses mains est couverte d’un gant, don’t les plis accusent toutes les phalanges des doigts. A droite et devant son maître, ou voit accroupi un chien caniche, brun et tacheté de blanc et de roux, qui semble épier le regard du spectateur. Le fond est un mur uni; à gauche seulement on Remarque une table couverte d’un tapis, d’un casque et d’autres accessoires. Ce portrait offre un beau type de cette profondeur de teintes harmonieuses, de cette puissance de relief, de ces surprenans effets de clair-obscur don’t l’intelligence semble avoir été innée chez Rembrant. Ce tableau qui joint au mérite d’exécution le plus transcendant, l’intérêt que doit inspirer le portrait de son auteur, provient de la collection du comte du Vaudreuil. Rien de plus parfait en ce genre, n’est sorti du pinceau de Rembrant."
