The Self Portrait was painted over another painting, depicting the head of a man (Karlsruhe 1960, no. 23).
Vorm/maten: staand ovaal 68.5 x 56.5 cm
Most art historians believe that the painting was originally oval and was made into a rectangle (73.5 x 59.6) at some point in time (Van Schendel 1956, no. 58; Karlsruhe 1960, no. 23). However, the RRP suggests that the painting was originally a rectangle, then changed into an oval, after which it was made rectangular again (Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings 1982-2015, vol. 4 (2005), no. IV 5). A narrow vertical strip on the left-hand side of the oval is a later addition (Van Schendel 1956, no. 58).

This painting is generally considered to be an autograph Rembrandt. Only Tümpel rejected this attribution, stating that it was made by someone from Rembrandt's workshop (Tümpel 1986 no. A 70).

During the exhibition X-rays were made of a lot of the exhibited paintings at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The study focused mainly on grounds, and to some extent on paint layers. Samples were taken of 75 panel and canvas paintings attributed to Rembrandt.
Prof. Dr. Hermann Kühn took the samples at the painting's institution with a stereomicroscope after which he analyzed them at the Doerner Institut in Munich.
